His Education and Banking Career

Trenkmann grew up in a lower-middle-class household in Central Texas, where he developed an interest in Spanish and Latin American culture.

In his December 3, 2024 interview on One Collective’s Collective Impact Podcast, he recalled getting his first passport at 21. His first international trip took him to the Dominican Republic, where he spent part of a summer and completed an internship with Domino’s Pizza.

A December 2016 Center Theatre Group profile published by BroadwayWorld records that Trenkmann earned both undergraduate and master’s degrees from Texas A&M University.

His interest in Latin America eventually became an important part of his banking career, taking him from Texas to Mexico and later into international commercial banking.

From Houston to International Banking

Trenkmann joined JPMorgan in 2004 and spent his first eight years on the Corporate and Investment Bank (CIB) oil-and-gas credit team in Houston.

He became interested in transferring to Latin America around 2007, although the financial crisis of 2007–2008 interrupted those plans. When international opportunities reopened, he accepted an assignment in Mexico City and moved there in July 2012.

For approximately two and a half years, he led JPMorgan’s CIB Latin American credit team in Mexico City, concentrating on Mexican corporations.

After returning to the United States, Trenkmann became involved in extending JPMorgan’s commercial banking operations internationally. The bank wanted to apply established corporate banking practices to a wider range of businesses in overseas markets.

His responsibilities included helping local teams implement lending standards, evaluate financial risks, and address regulatory requirements. He emphasized that local bankers developed client relationships, while his role involved helping establish the processes supporting those operations.

In his podcast interview, Trenkmann said his final international banking responsibilities covered more than 30 countries and approximately half the United States.

His Senior Roles at JPMorgan

Publicly filed financial agreements document two of Trenkmann’s JPMorgan titles.

A July 8, 2011 SEC-filed agreement involving Atlas Pipeline Partners carries his signature under the alternate spelling Marshall Trenckmann. The document identifies him as a Vice President signing for JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A., in its capacity as an incremental revolving credit lender.

A later June 7, 2018 SEC-filed credit agreement amendment involving Jazz Pharmaceuticals identifies him as an Executive Director signing on behalf of JPMorgan Chase Bank, NA.

Between those filings, his December 2016 professional profile identified him as a Credit Risk Director based in Los Angeles, managing the CCB West Diversified Portfolio.

These dated records establish his involvement in corporate lending and credit-risk management during different stages of his JPMorgan career.

Civic and nonprofit involvement

Trenkmann served on Center Theatre Group’s board from 2016 through September 2019. His appointment was announced in December 2016, and the organization’s Form 990 filing for the year ending June 2020, available through ProPublica’s Nonprofit Explorer, lists him as a director through September 30, 2019, under the spelling Marshall Trenckmann.

He also discussed his involvement with One Collective, a nonprofit organization, in its podcast published December 3, 2024.

Trenkmann traced the family’s involvement with One Collective to a 2019 visit to Santiago, Chile. There, Souza connected with Rachel and Alonzo, who were working with vulnerable young people. After learning about their activities, the couple became supporters.

He explained that he particularly appreciated One Collective’s emphasis on empowering people already working within local communities. That approach reminded him of his international banking experience, where local teams performed much of the work while others helped provide resources and organizational support.

How Did Marshall Trenkmann Meet Karla Souza?

In his podcast interview, he explained that a delay in moving into his apartment led him to rent a room temporarily from a local woman. She suggested that he meet a man who led a Bible study, and he eventually accepted the invitation.

At the Bible study, Trenkmann noticed Souza, who had arrived by bicycle. He began speaking to her in Spanish, but she responded in English. He recalled being immediately attracted to her and returning to the Bible study the following week.

The man leading the group was Souza’s uncle, who later officiated their wedding. Their shared religious community became an important part of their relationship.

On December 24, 2013, TVNotas reported the couple’s engagement.

They married in 2014, holding a civil ceremony in May followed by a Christian wedding in June.

Contemporary TVNotas coverage published on June 13, 2014 described their Christian ceremony at Hacienda Vista Hermosa. Heavy rain delayed the proceedings, and some guests removed their shoes to navigate the wet grounds.

Moving to Los Angeles

Soon after their June 2014 wedding, Souza began working on the American television series How to Get Away with Murder.

Trenkmann explained that the opportunity prompted their move to Los Angeles. He found a JPMorgan position in the city while Souza began the television project, which occupied approximately six years of her acting career.

The couple continued coordinating their work internationally. In 2019, Souza traveled to Santiago, Chile, to film a project, and Trenkmann worked from JPMorgan’s Santiago office during their stay.

That arrangement allowed him to maintain his banking responsibilities while accompanying Souza during an overseas filming commitment.

Why Did Marshall Trenkmann Leave Banking?

Trenkmann left JPMorgan around 2022 after approximately 18 to 19 years with the bank. The decision followed discussions with Souza about their demanding schedules and the time they wanted to spend raising their children.

In an interview reported by ¡HOLA! on August 21, 2024, Souza explained that both parents had been working extensively while their children spent considerable time with nannies.

Trenkmann’s banking responsibilities sometimes required him to return to the office during evenings and weekends. Souza said he had watched many of his bosses struggle with heart problems, severe stress, and divorce. Those experiences contributed to the couple’s conversations about changing their lifestyle, as she explained in the interview reported by ¡HOLA! on August 21, 2024.

She said Trenkmann spent approximately a year considering the decision. Although he appreciated his banking career, he did not regard it as his personal passion. Souza, meanwhile, wanted to continue pursuing acting.

They agreed that Trenkmann would leave his position and become the parent primarily responsible for managing the household.

In the August 2024 interview, Souza placed the change “hace dos años”, meaning two years earlier. Trenkmann independently described leaving JPMorgan “a couple of years ago” in his 2024 podcast interview, placing his departure around 2022.

He spoke warmly about his years at JPMorgan, saying he had left on good terms and maintained friendships with former colleagues.

What Changed After He Left JPMorgan?

By 2024, Trenkmann described himself as “technically a house husband” who continued to “do some stuff on the side.”

Souza similarly explained that he still undertook occasional consulting work, saying he “hace ciertas consultorías”. His principal focus, however, had become caring for their children and maintaining the family’s daily routine.

Souza described him preparing meals, making school lunches, and collecting the children. She also said he had more time for exercise, travel, and other personal activities.

Trenkmann explained that having one parent more consistently available at home created additional flexibility for their family. He viewed the decision as a way to make room for relationships, parenting, and activities that had previously competed with his professional commitments.

His account also emphasized maintaining a stable family routine when Souza’s acting projects required travel.

Marshall Trenkmann’s Age and Family Today

Trenkmann was 46 years old in June 2026, according to Karla Souza.

On June 24, 2026, Caras reported that the couple had celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary.

After Souza shared anniversary photographs, some social-media users mistakenly identified Trenkmann as her father rather than her husband.

Souza responded with humor, laughing about the confusion in a video and clarifying that the man in the photographs was her 46-year-old husband. She also encouraged people to normalize aging and wrinkles rather than judging appearances against unrealistic expectations.

Their three children are Gianna, whose birth Souza announced on Instagram on April 19, 2018; Luka, born in 2020; and Giulia, born in 2024.

Final Thoughts

Trenkmann spent nearly two decades building a banking career that took him from Houston to Mexico City and international financial markets. His professional background is documented through JPMorgan appointments, institutional records, and SEC-filed agreements. Since 2019, he and Souza have supported One Collective, a nonprofit they became involved with after visiting Santiago, Chile, that year. Around 2022, he stepped away from banking to take greater responsibility for family life while Souza continued acting.
